Based on a community needs assessment, Komen has identified the threefollowing funding priority areas:
-- To increase access to breast health information and services to womenliving in neighborhoods with high poverty rates.
-- To remove physical, cultural and linguistic barriers that women facethroughout the entire continuum of breast health care.
-- To engage the faith community in ensuring the delivery of culturallycompetent breast health information and services.
Nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies and educationalinstitutions in the Washington, D.C., Metro area, including Montgomery County,Md., Prince George's County, Md., Alexandria City, Va., Fairfax County, Va.,Loudoun County, Va., Arlington County, Va. or Prince William County, Va., areencouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 11, 2008.Proposals must be submitted through Komen's online grant application provider,which can be accessed by visiting the Susan G. Thanks to funds raised in the 2007 Susan G. Komen National Race for theCure, Komen awarded $3.3 million in grants to breast health and breast cancereducation, screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved inthe Washington, D.C., area.
Earlier this year Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced the awarding ofmore than $100 million in research grants, representing the largestsingle-year investment in research in the organization's 26-year history,cementing its position as the world's largest source of private funds forbreast cancer research. The 2008 grants slate moves Komen for the Cure closerto accomplishing its goal of investing $2 billion over the next 10 years todramatically decrease breast cancer incidence and mortality.
