Rd.com's People Making a Difference Web feature profiles those individuals who have made a profound difference in their communities. This month, Dan Gerstman, co-founder of the Garden City, NY-based Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation, was interviewed to explain how the Foundation came about and what its mission is.

According to Gerstman, the Foundation was established in 2003 as a result of a family tragedy involving the youngest Gerstman child, Lisa Beth. The family turned tragedy into triumph when they formed the Foundation, which helps fund summer day camp and sleep-away camp to physically disabled children in the New York Metropolitan area and Northeast United States. Over the past six years, the Foundation has partnered with several established not-for-profit camping institutions and helped hundreds of children with a wide range of physical disabilities, including spina bifida, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, blindness, and deafness, enjoy the thrill of summer camp in integrated environments with their able-bodied peers.
"We are honored that Readers Digest has recognized the work of the Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation," said Gerstman. "Awareness is the key to understanding so that we can continue to level the playing field for all children."
