This issue offers readers a chance to see large-scale biological research through the eyes of some of the best and the brightest scientists who are poised to make significant contributions to their areas of interest.

This year-end special issue features 30 up-and-coming young researchers focusing on a range of research areas, from sequencing and gene expression to proteomics and translational research.

The young investigators were nominated by scientists who are established leaders in the field today, including Victor Ambros at the University of Massachusetts, Mary-Claire King at the University of Washington, Eddy Rubin from the Joint Genome Institute, Janet Thornton of the European Bioinformatics Institute, and Rick Wilson at Washington University, to name just a few.

The investigators chosen to be Tomorrow's PIs were selected for their innovative work and research in a discipline that's part of the systems biology field, as well as for being early in their careers as scientists.

Thanks to proceeds from advertisers, Genome Technology is able to offer travel stipend awards to the young scientists profiled in the issue.
