GHI and HIP Lead Effort to Expand Electronic Health Record System Throughout the City of New York

NEW YORK, Nov. 5 Group Health Incorporated (GHI) and HIPHealth Plan of New York (HIP) will convene an educational seminar in New YorkCity on November 6 for primary care physicians treating underserved patientpopulations. The seminar, to be held at HIP headquarters, 55 Water St., willprovide information about a proposed expansion of the City's electronic healthrecord system for eligible physicians.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Primary CareInformation Project received funding previously to establish prevention-oriented electronic health record system in the offices of 1,500 eligibleprimary care physicians, including every community health center in the City.The City has now applied for an expanded grant from New York State to fundanother 650 physicians.

Under the grant, eligible physicians will receive licenses to electronichealth record systems provided by eClinicalWorks, on-site training, and systemmaintenance support, which will cover about half of the total costs ofimplementing an electronic health record system. These systems are fullyloaded with practice management and clinical support tools, including featuressuch as scheduling, billing, electronic charting, and e-prescribing. Alsooffered are point-of-care electronic alerts that incorporate clinicalguidelines, a member portal, and an electronic connection to immunizationregistries and other public health resources.

"By marshalling the power of EHR systems to boost administrativeefficiencies and support care coordination and disease management, New YorkCity physicians will be able to transform the way they care for theirpatients," says Dr. Aran Ron, President of GHI.
