Assisi Animal Health reveals four ways that you can help your horse age gracefully and not only extend the horse's life, but give it a better quality of life.

  1. Choose the proper food. As your horse ages, its daily nutritional needs may change. This is largely dependent on its lifestyle. Just like people, younger horses require greater amounts of vitamins and minerals. Feed them a high-quality hay as they age and supplement with horse feed dependent on individual needs. Feeding them well will keep their immune system healthier and give them more strength to fend off illness and disease.
  2. Take care of their teeth. If a horse isn't properly able to chew its food, its health could be in jeopardy—which can lead to colic, malnutrition, and weight loss—not to mention an increased risk of choking if the teeth aren't working properly. And, chewing hay and grass over a long period of time can wear down its teeth. It is important to have your horse's teeth checked regularly as it gets older.
  3. Get them outside. The more time your horse spends outside, the more it will encourage the horse to move around.. Make sure your horse has enough room to roam, which will also help with mobility. Although an older horse might not be ridden as often as a younger one, he or she can be ridden at a slower pace or walked around. An active horse will be a happier one, and sleep better at night.
  4. Keep up routine care. Make sure you continue to get your horse's hooves trimmed. As it becomes more difficult for an aging horse to walk, not taking care of the hooves will add to any discomfort your horse may be experiencing. Finally, don't forget to schedule regular veterinary checkups.
