"Molly has worked tirelessly to move CalRHIO from an idea to an operating entity," said Duane Dauner, California Hospital Association president and CalRHIO vice chair. "Without her vision and remarkable gift for connecting people and getting them to collaborate CalRHIO would not have been possible. We are fortunate to secure a person of Dr. Coye's experience and talent as CalRHIO's CEO."

"Molly's vision for health information exchange as a public good has guided CalRHIO's board from the beginning," said Don Crane, CEO of CAPG and CalRHIO board member. "With her extensive knowledge of health care and technology, she has articulated a clear picture of where we need to go and why."

Coye succeeds Don Holmquest, MD, JD, who moved into a senior advisory role in late 2008.

"I look forward to taking on added responsibilities at CalRHIO as we accelerate our efforts to provide physicians across the state with patient information when and where they need it. Ultimately, health information exchange must address the complex nature of data sharing and the costs of doing so," said Coye. "CalRHIO has the only sustainable solution for assuring the ongoing financial viability of HIE."

Coye was founder and CEO of the Health Technology Center (HealthTech), a San Francisco-based non-profit research organization that has joined with the Public Health Institute (PHI) in Oakland.

"For the past eight years, HealthTech has helped the nation's most influential hospitals, health care systems and government agencies prioritize and invest in technologies that make health care safer and more affordable," said Coye. "It has become increasingly clear that our industry-leading research must become more widely accessible as the nation seeks to transform health care and leverage emerging clinical and health information technologies to do so. Our vision has always been to advance the use of new technologies to improve the health of people and communities. Affiliating with PHI is the best way to assure fulfillment of our vision."

HealthTech and PHI are currently exploring the best way to archive and disseminate HealthTech's work in order to make it widely available to researchers, public health leaders, policy leaders and health providers both in the U.S. and globally.

"HealthTech's impressive body of work complements our mission to advance community health and improve the efficacy of public health statewide, nationally and internationally," said Mary A. Pittman, DrPH, president and CEO of PHI. "We are thrilled to be in a position to extend the influence of HealthTech's important work and to leverage its assets to ensure that public health is included in the dialog on health reform."

Coye has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. She served as Commissioner of Health for the State of New Jersey and Director of the California Department of Health Services, in addition to heading the Division of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, leading marketing and product development for interactive health communication and disease management at HealthDesk Corp, serving as Executive Vice President for the Good Samaritan Health System, and directing The Lewin Group's West Coast office.

As a member of the Institute of Medicine, Coye co-authored the reports To Err is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm, chaired the Committee on Access to Insurance for Children, and co-chaired the Committee on Patient Safety Data Standards.

Coye serves on the board of the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), one of the largest and most creative nonprofit organizations working in international health, and on the board of Aetna, Inc., one of the nation's largest health insurers. She served on the board of the American Hospital Association for five years, until 2007, and was a founding board member of The California Endowment, the largest private health care philanthropy in California.

Coye has her M.D. and M.P.H. degrees from Johns Hopkins University and is board certified by the American College of Preventive Medicine.

CalRHIO is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides statewide health information exchange services to local communities throughout California. For more information about CalRHIO see www.calrhio.org.
