Forget $4 gas; More Iowans Are Buying Cleaner-burning E85
"In May 2008, approximately 492,131 gallons were sold in Iowa -- more than half the amount sold in a three-month quarter just one year earlier," said Jessica Zopf, manager of the Iowa Clean Air Choice Team, a public-private partnership to promote biofuels and less polluting technologies. "I attribute this to three factors: concern about the environment, more E85 retailers and the hard realities of $4 a gallon gasoline." On average, E85 sold for $2.94 a gallon in May, Zopf noted. There are now 85 E85 stations in Iowa.
The American Lung Association of Iowa is a strong supporter of E85 as one method to reduce air pollution from vehicle emissions "To put the May sales figures in proper perspective, the E85 used by Iowa flex fuel drivers in one month alone prevented more than 1,950 tons of air pollutants from entering our air," Zopf said.
