This event marks the first season's end for the Play Safe in the Suncampaign, a 3-year community outreach service presented by WDS incollaborative partnership with L'Oreal USA. Since the joint effort begantouring golf and tennis events in May 2008, 44 dermatologists have volunteeredtheir time, and have discovered several hundred skin cancers among the PlaySafe in the Sun tent visitors.

As event co-chair Dr. Rendon points out, "It's so crucial for people ofall skin types to protect their skin from the cumulative effects of deliberateand incidental sun exposure, particularly in our sun-soaked region." Whetherunder sunny or cloudy skies, this includes "a daily commitment to wearing andre-applying broad-spectrum sunscreen, covering up with protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat, and seeking shade whenever possible," states co-chairDr. Collier. For golfers, this translates into an application of a golfball-sized amount of sunscreen, reapplied every nine holes (every two hours).

WDS members Adrienne Stewart, MD (Denver, CO) and Michel McDonald, MD(Nashville, TN) lead the WDS Service Committee, which oversees the nationalPlay Safe in the Sun campaign. The volunteer outreach draws from theorganization's 1,600 members to heighten sun safety awareness and promotehealthy skin practices among outdoor sports enthusiasts.
