SKILLMAN, N.J., July 17 ConvaTec, a world-leading developer and marketer of innovative medical technologies for community and hospital care, announced today it received first place (Total Recall Category) in the 2008 Critical Care Nurse Advertising Effectiveness Awards for its Flexi-Seal((R) )Fecal Management System (FMS).

The innovative Flexi-Seal((R)) FMS, a temporary containment device for patients with acute fecal incontinence, was designed to safely and effectively divert liquid or semi-liquid fecal matter, help protect patients' wounds from fecal contamination, and reduce the risk of both skin breakdown and spread of infection, such as infection with Clostridium difficile (C. difficile).

"ConvaTec is proud to receive this recognition for Flexi-Seal((R) )FMS from our important customers in critical care nursing," said Michael Steadman, President, ConvaTec USA. "As the leader in helping clinicians manage acute fecal incontinence, we are continuing to respond to customer and patient needs with upgraded and improved features -- an approach that has made Flexi-Seal((R) )FMS the number one brand in the U.S. today."(1) ( )

Critical Care Nurse presented the Award to ConvaTec based on reader responses to a survey comparing 17 advertisements in the publication's October 2008 issue. Survey respondents ranked the Flexi-Seal((R)) FMS advertisement best in the Total Recall Category, with 90 percent responding that they recalled seeing the advertisement, and rated it highly for visual appeal, ease of reading and showing the benefits of the product.

Flexi-Seal((R)) FMS is widely used at over 1,800 intensive care unit hospitals(2) in the United States, and more than 500,000 patients have benefited from the use of Flexi-Seal((R)) FMS.(2) ConvaTec continues to support healthcare professionals with a dedicated on-call nurse specialist program. To date, more than 110,000 nurses have been trained on Flexi-Seal((R)) FMS.(3)( )

In October 2008, ConvaTec also introduced Flexi-Seal((R)) FMS Advanced Odor Control, specifically designed to help manage odor* associated with fecal incontinence. While maintaining all of the benefits of the original product, Flexi-Seal((R) )FMS Advanced Odor Control has been shown to successfully eliminate* catheter odor permeation to levels below those that are humanly detectable. Parylene-coated silicone catheters do not effectively manage odor.(4)

* Eliminates perceptible naphthalenic (indole) and sulfide odors radiating from the catheter tube.

In response to the increased focus on pressure ulcer prevention, especially following the inclusion of Stage 3 and 4 pressure ulcers acquired after admission to a healthcare facility on the list of "never events" by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), ConvaTec is also conducting a clinical road show focusing on helping to prevent hospital-acquired pressure ulcers, as well as helping to reduce the risk of spread of infection, throughout 2009.
