On August 2, 2007 and August 14, 2007, Mattel, Inc. and Fisher-Price, Inc. announced recalls of more than 1.5 million of their toys based on popular characters from children's television shows such as Dora the Explorer, Elmo, and Sesame Street, and Sarge from the children's movie CARS. The affected toys allegedly contain impermissible amounts of lead which, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, can cause adverse health effects.
