Asone of the best ways for families to enjoy the winter months, the skatingseason is in full swing and will be going strong for another seven weeks.Independence Blue Cross helps save members money by offering a $2 discount forthose who show a member ID card.
The Independence Blue Cross Annual Healthy Kids Fest celebrates ways forkids to have fun that are safe and also healthy for them. The celebration,which takes place Saturday, January 12, 2008, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at theBlue Cross RiverRink, is one more way Independence Blue Cross is helping ourmembers and the community to feel great in '08. As childhood obesity continuesto escalate as a serious health issue in Pennsylvania, exercise isincreasingly important for our youth, and skating is a terrific way to burncalories and get in shape.

Healthy Kids Fest, this Saturday, will feature information and tips forfamilies on how to stay healthy. The event offers interactive games, fitnessdemonstrations from Philadelphia area exercise expert, Don Baxter, and freeinformation about nutrition, fitness and healthy eating. A party room insidethe heated facility will be transformed into a workout center for exerciseinstruction, fitness demonstrations and information on how to stay active allyear long.
NBC's "Biggest Loser" contestant, Nicole, will make a special appearanceand talk about her experience of losing an amazing 105 pounds. Since healthysnacking builds healthy kids, there will be free samples of beverages, cheeseand other healthy snacks. Added to the entertainment will be free activitiesincluding face-painting, make-and-take crafts and family friendly fitnessvideos on a giant indoor video wall. A variety of fun fitness games, designedspecifically to increase coordination and promote good sportsmanship, will beset up for kids to try. Games will include: "Better Body Bingo" in which thefirst person to match the foods on the Better Body Bingo Cards to create theproper meal, wins a prize. Another game -- "If You Must Snack" -- allowsparticipants to compare snacks as they are quizzed on the healthier snackchoices.
Healthy Kids Fest activities are free to the public. Skating sessions cost$6 per person and skating hours during Healthy Kids Fest are from 12:30 p.m.to 2:30 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Independence Blue Cross members canreceive a $2 discount off admission by showing a member ID card. Skate rentalis $3 with convenient parking for $8.
Public skating sessions: Mondays through Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.;Fridays 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., 8:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m., and 11 p.m. - 1 a.m.;Saturdays from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.,8:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. - 1 a.m.; Sundays from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30p.m., 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., and 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Skate to a live DJ every Fridayand Karaoke on Saturday Night from 9 p.m. - 12 Midnight.
