WALTHAM, Mass., June 1 According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, and the only provider of intraoral scanner market information, the global intraoral scanner market will grow to over $61 million by 2014. According to MRG's Global Markets for Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) Systems 2010 report, growth will be driven by the entrance of new competitors and the benefits that this new technology provides to both patients and dentists.

An intraoral scanner is the acquisition unit in a chairside dental CAD/CAM system, and is used by dentists to acquire a digital impression of the surgical site within the patient's mouth. The traditional impression taking technique requires the use of a putty-based material that can often require having to be re-done due to the inaccurate nature of the impression. With intraoral scanners, several pictures of the surgical area are taken, providing in-depth, accurate details. These scanners can increase efficiencies because unlike traditional methods, using intraoral scanners generally does not require re-doing the impression, saving both chair and turnaround time to the dentist and patient. These benefits will increase the adoption of these systems, spurring growth through 2014.

The launch of 3M ESPE's new Chairside Oral Scanner device and the exclusive distribution relationship between Straumann and Cadent in 2009 helped to promote growth in the European intraoral scanner market by increasing market initiatives that spurred greater market awareness of the benefits of these devices. Cadent can leverage Straumann's reputation and relationships with dentists to help promote growth in the intraoral scanner market in Europe and possibly worldwide.

"In Japan, however, Sirona was the only option for those purchasing an intraoral scanner as of early 2010," says Edward Park, Senior Analyst at MRG. "Over the next five years, however, more competitors will enter the Japanese market, including companies focused on selling just an intraoral scanner as opposed to a complete system leading to high double-digit growth in unit sales starting in 2011."

MRG's Global Markets for CAD/CAM Systems 2010 report covers the US, Japan and Europe (France, Germany, Italy and the UK) and provides critical insight into the emerging trends and competitors that will fuel market growth. The report also provides a detailed discussion on the laboratory and chairside segments, which are further segmented to show the markets for scanners and complete systems. The report provides a complete breakdown of unit sales, average selling prices, installed base, and market revenues by segment, including five-year forecasts, up-to-date market shares, and in-depth qualitative insights.
