FAIRFAX, Va., Aug. 31 The Office of National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology in Health and Human Services (HHS) issued key considerations and challenges for HIE implementation as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Title XIII funding document.

One of the key considerations is:

Privacy and security of health information, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information, are integral to fostering health information exchange. States and SDEs must establish how the privacy and security of an individual's health information will be addressed, including the governance, policy, and technical mechanisms that will be employed for health information exchange.

Conducting a Certification and Accreditation (C&A) assessment in accordance with NIST guidance is essential to validating that the confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA) of information is maintained. Edmond (www.edmondsci.com), staffed with the most qualified NHIN evaluations team, led by practice director Tony Mallia, performs these assessments, prepares the artifacts for accreditation of the systems, policies, and procedures, and identifies the gaps for improvement; all in preparation for HIEs road to RHIO/NHIN Readiness.

CEO John Pitale states, "We have conducted identical studies for other health information systems and organizations, and are expertly positioned to expand our current C&A assessments to include the new paradigm of health information exchange through the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) involving the enforcement of patient consent directives and policies from provider systems through the NHIN gateway."

Due to strenuous deadlines in qualifying for ARRA Stimulus grants, HIEs requiring assessments are directed to Mary O'Donnell for more information in certifying and accrediting an organization's systems and policies to meet ONC/HHS and State criteria.
