NEW YORK, May 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Skin Cancer Foundation's Road to Healthy Skin Tour presented by The AVEENO® Brand and Rite Aid,
In 2010, more than 114,900 new cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, were diagnosed in the US, and despite advances in skin cancer treatment, the disease still claimed one victim every sixty-two minutes. This staggering statistic can be dramatically reduced through education on sun protection, behavior modification and early detection(1). Since 2008, the Road to Healthy Skin Tour has enlisted the help of local dermatologists who donated their time to provide 10,500 free screenings, detecting 7,100+ suspicious findings and 214 possible melanomas.
The Tour provides a comfortable, mobile examining room for private screenings completely free of charge. According to the Census Bureau, more than 50 million people were uninsured in 2010, which means almost one in six U.S. residents did not have adequate medical care.
"When detected early, skin cancer is almost always curable," says Perry Robins, MD, President, The Skin Cancer Foundation. "Our hope is that this tour empowers people to take better care of their health while educating them about the importance of sun protection. We're happy to partner with AVEENO to demonstrate our commitment to encouraging an overall healthy lifestyle."
According to a recent study published by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, patients reported that denial was the most frequent reason for waiting to see a doctor about a suspicious lesion - accounting for 71 percent of all melanoma cases. Specifically, 36 percent "thought it would go away" and 24 percent "thought it wasn't important." Dermatologist, Dr. Jeanine Downie notes, "There are other reasons why people are uncomfortable visiting a dermatologist such as negative body image. Don't let denial or other excuses keep you from getting screened. I urge all of my patients to make an appointment immediately should they find a suspicious mark on their skin. Preventive care is key in all areas of medicine, which is why it is also critical to be diligent with annual screenings in all races for both sexes."
To encourage the development of smart sun habits, the AVEENO Brand will be distributing samples of its new sunscreen collections. Visitors to the tour will receive trial-size product from the ground-breaking AVEENO HYDROSPORT™ and AVEENO NATURAL PROTECTION Sunscreen lines. Harnessing the water-repelling ability of the Natural Lotus Complex, AVEENO HYDROSPORT has been developed for better wet skin application compared to ordinary sunscreens for active adults and kids. For those with sensitive skin, the AVEENO NATURAL PROTECTION line - fortified with MINERALBLOCK Technology and skin-soothing ACTIVE NATURALS Oat, provides superior sun coverage without skin irritation. All AVEENO sun care products contain photo-stable technology that delivers exceptional protection to last longer.
