AHIMA President

Good morning, everyone and thank you joining us...

On behalf of the A-H-I-M-A Board of Directors...it is my great pleasure to introduce our next chief executive officer, Doctor Alan Dowling...

Back last summer the Board embarked on a nationwide search for someone who we knew could effectively replace Linda Kloss as C-E-O.

In doing so...we looked at the very critical juncture the H-I-M profession presently finds itself...

We considered this very unique confluence of circumstances and timing and determined that the next Aheema chief executive had to be...

...a proven leader with a wealth of executive experience...

...a broad mix of very specific skills...

...and above all...someone...whom we felt confident...would hit the ground running...

That's because in this era of reform...the future of healthcare ...and...as a consequence...our future...the future of health information management... is shifting faster...more often... and more severely than at any prior time...

After an exhaustive search...one candidate...stood head and shoulders above all the others...Doctor Alan Dowling.

In the coming months and years...the Board believes our members will learn what we already know...Alan Dowling is the ideal leader...at this historic time... for the enormous job that lay ahead.

Ladies and gentlemen...Doctor Alan Dowling...

AHIMA Chief Executive Officer Designee

Thank you...Vera...

Good morning...everyone...

As Vera just stated...this is a rare and critical juncture for healthcare...

Policy is being shaped right now that will determine who we are as professionals and what we do as a profession for... perhaps...the next fifty years or more.

Yet...even as health system reform slowly winds its way through the legislative process...there's not a whole lot anyone can say definitively about how the final product will look or feel.

What we do know...however...is that no matter its final shape...our reformed healthcare system will be built on a platform of health information technology and run by a growing health information management labor force.

This is more than an extraordinary moment in time...

And there can be no more critical point in time for A-H-I-M-A to become more than extraordinary advocates for our members...

As industry leaders...

...as ICD-10 change agents...

...as an expert resource for ARRA's Meaningful Use policy-making...

...as standard-setters for health information privacy and security...medical identity theft and patients' rights...

I arrive here with a sound understanding...and a deep appreciation... for the very unique position A-H-I-M-A finds itself...

...a position that is...in fact...historic.

Ours is a challenge and an opportunity so rare and so profound that I cannot imagine how anyone...our staff...our board and...especially...our members...are not excited simply by the mere possibility of tomorrow...

I'll stop there and entertain any questions...
