Press Conference and Rally:

Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania, Disabled In Action of PA, the Pennsylvania Mental Health Consumer Association, Liberty Resources and numerous advocacy and disability rights organizations will hold a press conference and rally today at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, site of the National Conference of State Legislators' summer meeting. Participants in the rally will include people of all ages, gender and disabilities - including wounded veterans, people with physical disabilities, the elderly, those with developmental and intellectual challenges and other health issues.

Purpose:

The groups demanded access to better alternatives than just institutionalization. Medicaid only requires states to provide funding for costly nursing homes and institutions for older and disabled people. It does not require states to provide funding for less expensive, community-based or home-based services. Pennsylvania legislators are suggesting cuts to the limited funding that currently allows disabled Pennsylvanians to live independently and be actively employed. And there are lengthy waiting lists for those limited services.
