State-Specific Data is Part of a Broad Collection of Election-Related Resources for Reporters

With South Carolina holding its Democratic presidential primary Saturday, Florida holding primaries for both parties Tuesday, and voters in 25 other states taking part in primaries and caucuses by Super Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Kaiser Family Foundation's statehealthfacts.org provides reporters with instant access to detailed data on demographics, health and the economy in each state. The site provides state-specific information on more than 500 topics including the number of uninsured residents, median household income, unemployment rates, population breakdowns by age and race, poverty rates and health-care spending.

For example, the 27 states with primaries and caucuses over the next two weeks include New Jersey, the state with the highest median household income, and Arkansas and West Virginia, two of the three states with the lowest median household income. Collectively they have 27 million residents without health insurance, well over half of all the uninsured population nationwide. The states include California, which has more uninsured residents than the total populations of 38 other states, and Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, where at least one in five residents lacks health coverage.

By using the individual state profiles feature, available at http://www.statehealthfacts.org/profile.jsp, reporters can quickly pull together current, detailed data that can shed light on the campaign and key issues in a particular state. In addition, the data can also be sorted and mapped to allow quick comparisons across states and to national averages, allowing reporters to highlight how a particular state fares on any specific topic.

Statehealthfacts.org is just one of the Foundation's many resources for reporters and others closely following the election.
