EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., April 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Wound Care Technologies, Inc. is pleased to announce that the DermaClose® Continuous External Tissue Expander is now available at The University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital and its centers. The DermaClose device is utilized by plastic, orthopedic, vascular and general surgeons in a surgery setting.  These surgeons have found the DermaClose best assists with large wounds such as fasciotomies, excisional wounds, flap donor sites, sternal wounds, knee revisions, necrotizing fasciitis and traumatic wounds. DermaClose can often help patients avoid painful skin grafts and their associated scarring and eliminate the donor site wound.

The University of Alabama Birmingham after a thorough review of the clinical benefits and cost effectiveness of DermaClose, decided that using DermaClose would be both highly beneficial to their patients undergoing surgery for large wounds and would also further their mission of providing world-class care while maintaining their status as a major center for clinical research.

According to Herrick J. Siegel, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at UAB, "This technology has had tremendous positive impact on my patients with complex Orthopaedic problems. DermaClose is an important component in my armamentarium in the management of my patients with soft tissue and skin loss from prior infections, tumors and trauma."

Dr. Siegel encourages physicians to refer patients with complex soft tissue loss or complications to UAB for evaluation.  At UAB, a team approach is used with collaboration of plastic surgery, orthopedics and wound care specialist to optimize treatment.  They may be reached at 205-930-8339 for more information.

To date, DermaClose has been used in over 15,000 cases nationally.

The DermaClose is a very effective alternative to skin grafts and other treatment modalities such as negative pressure wound therapy. The DermaClose can save significant money by reducing length of hospital stay compared to other treatment methods.  The WCT team is proud to be able to assist surgeons in helping their patients achieve better outcomes and get them out of the hospital faster resulting in overall reduced costs to our healthcare system.
