Diacetyl is an artificial butter flavor used in many popcorn products,including a significant number of microwave popcorn items. There has been amovement in the State of California, specifically legislative bills AB514 andSB456, to ban the use of chemical Diacetyl in production facilities andcommercial distribution. In addition, the New York Times reported today thatthe Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association issued a statementrecommending that its members reduce "to the extent possible" the amount ofDiacetyl in the butter flavorings they make, out of concern for the health andsafety of both factory workers and consumers.
