HORSHAM, Pa., Nov. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- DRUGSCAN© Pharmaceutical Services, leaders in conducting laboratory-based manipulation and extraction studies, announced today that their scientists will be presenting data at the 2016 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Annual Meeting and Exposition held in Denver Colorado, from® laboratory-based studies they conducted to assess the abuse-deterrent features of a polyethylene oxide (POLYOX™) based matrix formulation and the smoke-ability of opioid formulations. The data being presented can help guide developers of abuse-deterrent products.

Those looking to abuse opioids manipulate the opioid's dosage form to extract the active ingredient or defeat the extended-release properties of long-acting opioids.  Methods of opioid manipulation include crushing or grinding, dissolving in solvents and heating or freezing.  Once manipulated, the abuser either injects, insufflates (snorts), rectally administer or smokes the opioid to achieve the desired euphoria. Abuse-deterrent products are designed to resist those methods of abuse.

"The science of evaluating the performance of abuse-deterrent products is rapidly evolving," said Dr. Anthony Costantino, Ph.D., President and CEO of DRUGSCAN©. "The data from our® studies that we are presenting at AAPS are helpful to abuse-deterrent product developers in designing products that are more resistant to abuse."

The following posters will be presented at AAPS:

Optimization of a Smoking-Simulation Technique to Investigate Smoke-Ability of Opioids from Pharmaceutical Formulations – Poster # 14T0330 being presented Tuesday November 15, 2016 3:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
