WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 The following release was issued today by the Democratic National Committee:
Yesterday, news broke that Susan Orr, a staunch anti-family planning advocate, has been appointed to head the U.S. contraception programs at the Department of Health and Human Services. [Wall Street Journal, 10/16/07] This appointment is just the latest example of the Bush Administration's continued practice of putting Republican politics ahead of what's best for the American people.

As the senior director for marriage and family at the conservative Family Research Council, Orr praised the Bush Administration's attempt to eliminate birth control coverage for federal employees. In a 2001 Washington Post article, she said, "We're quite pleased because fertility is not a disease. It's not a medical necessity that you have it." [Washington Post, 4/12/01]

"Only in the Bush Administration would a critic of contraception be appointed to head a contraception program," said DNC Press Secretary Stacie Paxton. "President Bush and his Republican allies just don't get it. Women should have access to contraception so that they can have the opportunity to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. It's time for Republicans to stop letting their narrow ideology trump good policy."
