Cutting Edge CyberKnife Cancer Treatment Center to Open in Tampa Bay Area

TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 22 The first of its kind in the Tampaarea, the CyberKnife Center of Tampa Bay will break ground in January of 2008,and is scheduled to be operational by summer.

The CyberKnife Center of Tampa Bay, developed and operated by Tampa BayRadiosurgical Associates, LLC, will operate as an "open" treatment center. Itwill be used by a large number of physicians from various institutions andpractices, in order to provide whole-body radiosurgery treatment to thebroadest number of patients.

The CyberKnife utilizes unique "image-guided" technology that isseamlessly integrated with intelligent robotics to deliver higher doses oftargeted radiation to cancerous tumors almost anywhere in the body. It isproven to be effective in treating head, neck, spine, prostate, liver, lungand pancreatic cancers, as well as other tumors.

This non-invasive radiosurgery device can ablate tumors and other lesions,almost anywhere in the body, previously unreachable by other therapies. It canbe used as a primary therapy -- or as an adjunct to surgery and othertreatments. It is frequently considered a worthwhile alternative for patientswho have failed other modalities. Developed at Stanford University, it hasbeen used to treat tens of thousands of patients worldwide in over 100facilities since 1994.

The CyberKnife is manufactured by Accuray, Inc., of Sunnyvale, California.
