Research shows that hungry children suffer up to four times as many health problems as non-hungry children, are more likely to be absent from school, and are far more likely to suffer from iron-deficiency anemia, which can cause developmental and behavioral problems that affect children's ability to learn.

The grant will ensure that at least 30,000 breakfasts and afterschool snacks are served to over 430 students and that nearly 3,000 backpacks full of food for the weekend are provided throughout the year to approximately 120 students in the Northeastern Nevada region. The program is coordinated by Communities In Schools of Northeastern Nevada staff and volunteers.

"We are grateful for the support by the DHHS," said Executive Director, Terri Clark. "When children are hungry they can't focus on school. By supporting our hunger prevention programs, they ensure that all children have a fair chance to be successful in school and in life," she added.
