MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., Dec. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Commission for Case Manager Certification® named MaryBeth Kurland, CAE, as its chief executive officer. The Commission is the oldest and largest organization certifying case managers, and a leader in case manager preparation and lifelong learning opportunities through its education programs and recertification requirements.

Kurland served the Commission as chief operations officer since 2010. She worked closely with the late Commission CEO, Patrice V. Sminkey, under whose leadership the organization rapidly expanded the ranks of board-certified case managers to more than 40,000. As CEO, Kurland leads the organization in its mission to advocate for professional case management excellence through certification and related Commission programs and services. The Commission is dedicated to case manager workforce development through board certification —preparation and readiness to excel in an evolving health care environment.

The Commission also announced today that Debby Formica has been named the Commission's chief operations officer and is responsible for staff oversight and internal operations.

"The Commission's efforts to enhance professional development go beyond certification," said Jane Harkey, RN-BC, MSW, CCM, chair of the Board of Commissioners. "Our focus on workforce preparation, development and readiness means top health care leadership connects case manager competency to the CCM. Board certification means case managers are ready for what comes next.

"MaryBeth was responsible for operationalizing numerous advancements that enabled us to scale up and experience enormous growth over the past six years," she said. "Since she came on board, the Commission essentially doubled the number of board-certified case managers. She has a vision for a strong Commission that will continue to build and grow this community of case managers."

Kurland previously served as executive director of the Association of Medical Media, Office Business Center Association International and the League of Professional System Administrators. She was recognized as Association TRENDS Young & Aspiring Association Professional in 2011. She is a member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, the American Society of Association Executives and the Mid-Atlantic Society of Association Executives.

"Expectations for case managers have rapidly evolved as health care has changed. They're a strategic member of the team for care coordination and smooth care transitions," Kurland said. "The Commission's continued work focusing on certification and excellence in case management—across all care settings—is our core focus for continued growth. The Commission is strongly positioned to support case managers' professional development needs for many years to come."

Formica also joined the Commission in 2010, working in leadership positions in business development, administration and operations; she most recently served as assistant vice president of operations. Previously, she served eight years in health care financial consulting, and then worked as a contract manager and analyst for Johnson & Johnson Health Systems. She holds a bachelor of science in accounting from Lehigh University and is a member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE), the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the Mid-Atlantic Society of Association Executives (MASAE).

The Board of Commissioners also announced formation of the Patrice V. Sminkey Memorial Foundation, honoring the memory of the former Commission CEO. Its purpose and mission aligns with that of the Commission--to advance the profession of case management through educational opportunities that support workforce development within case management. The Foundation will provide funding for professional development through certification and other educational opportunities.

"Patrice's energy, admirable character and commitment to our mission inspired all of us—hundreds of volunteers and more than 40,000 board-certified case managers—to advocate for a relevant and expanding case manager workforce," Harkey said. "The Patrice V. Sminkey Foundation is a fitting reminder to all of us of that dedication and the work that we continue."

Foundation funds will also be used for individuals to attend professional development events such as the CCMC New World Symposium™, the Commission's three-day national event designed to address an urgent workforce development need for well-prepared, knowledgeable case managers. The CCMC 2017 New World Symposium will be held at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, Jan. 26-28, 2017 in Dallas. A reception for attendees to welcome Kurland and Formica in their new roles is planned for the first day of the event.
