PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Sbarro Health Research Organization (www.shro.org) at Temple University has launched the Columbus Cancer Foundation (www.columbuscancerfoundation.org), a nonprofit organization that will raise funds for joint American and European educational initiatives, basic and clinical cancer research and international scientific collaboration.

The name was chosen in honor of the courage and conviction with which Christopher Columbus embarked across unknown waters in the search of great discoveries.

"Today, great discoveries occur in laboratories around the world in response to the tragedy of cancer, a condition estimated to affect one out of every four individuals," says Antonio Giordano, M.D., Ph.D., the Founder and President of SHRO. "Fortunately, it is possible to understand, prevent and cure many types of cancer with the assistance of continued research funding which enables the discovery of genetically targeted diagnostic and therapeutic treatments."
"The primary goal of the Columbus Cancer Foundation is to stimulate clinical and laboratory cancer research that will ultimately enable us to develop personalized medicine techniques that will improve the survival and quality of life of cancer patients," explains Cora N. An eminent American and Italian Medical Oncologist, Dr. Sternberg is currently the Chairman of the Department of Medical Oncology at San Camillo and Forlanini Hospitals in Rome, Italy, and a Professor at La Sapienza University in the Medical Oncology School of Specialization.
