"Today, great discoveries occur in laboratories around the world in response to the tragedy of cancer, a condition estimated to affect one out of every four individuals," says Antonio Giordano, M.D., Ph.D., the Founder and President of SHRO. "Fortunately, it is possible to understand, prevent and cure many types of cancer with the assistance of continued research funding which enables the discovery of genetically targeted diagnostic and therapeutic treatments."

"The primary goal of the Columbus Cancer Foundation is to stimulate clinical and laboratory cancer research that will ultimately enable us to develop personalized medicine techniques that will improve the survival and quality of life of cancer patients," explains Cora N. Sternberg, M.D., FACP, the Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board. "Our mission is to develop, coordinate and conduct programs related to patient care, cutting edge research and education."

"There are many problems which need to be addressed in cancer treatment, including prevention, mechanisms of tumor development, the tumor environment, and mechanisms of response and resistance," says Sternberg. "Patient care will ultimately benefit from our increased understanding of the biology of cancer and possible therapeutic targets, their mechanisms of survival and overcoming resistance to therapy."

Donations to the new foundation can be made online at http://columbuscancerfoundation.org/.

An eminent American and Italian Medical Oncologist, Dr. Sternberg is currently the Chairman of the Department of Medical Oncology at San Camillo and Forlanini Hospitals in Rome, Italy, and a Professor at La Sapienza University in the Medical Oncology School of Specialization.

The Sbarro Health Research Organization is a nonprofit research center located at Temple University that conducts genetic and molecular research in cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the campus of Temple University, our programs train young scientists from around the globe.
