ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 28 Clear Choice Health Plans, Inc. has chosen Thomson Reuters as the vendor for the Treatment Cost Calculator, an application that enables individuals to accurately estimate their out-of-pocket costs for planned healthcare services. The Treatment Cost Calculator also shows consumers how costs vary from one healthcare provider to another.

Clear Choice is headquartered in Bend, Oregon, where a new state law requires health plans to provide treatment cost estimates to their members and healthcare providers.

Using the Treatment Cost Calculator, Clear Choice will exceed the new regulatory requirements. Oregon law requires health plans to provide estimates for 35 medical procedures, while Clear Choice will provide estimates for more than 200 procedures as well as provide relevant educational material.

The Treatment Cost Calculator provides individuals (and their healthcare providers) with personalized cost information based on the specific details of their health benefit plans - including their remaining deductible, out-of-pocket limits, co-insurance and other factors.

"Many health plans provide their members with decision support tools, but utilization typically is low because these resources don't draw upon personalized information. Consumers most want to know what they will pay out-of-pocket for services. Our solution provides accurate cost estimates because it integrates up-to-date information from the member's benefit plan," said David Crean, senior vice president for the Healthcare & Science business of Thomson Reuters. "Clear Choice is going above-and-beyond in providing transparency - and we're honored to be a part of their solution."

Rowena Bergmans, vice president of medical management for Clear Choice, said: "We want to facilitate informed discussions about medical care and its costs between our members and their providers. When they know how benefits will apply to specific services and treatments, they can make good decisions and effectively plan for future expenses. After evaluating all our options, we concluded that the Treatment Cost Calculator was the best way to fill this need."

The Treatment Cost Calculator is part of the Consumer Advantage(TM) suite of online solutions from Thomson Reuters.
