Beginning September 3, the Choco Milk Matters to Kids Tour will make appearances in major metropolitan cities at community festivals, youth organizations and retail locations. Among the cities and festivals featuring the free experience are Houston's Fiestas Patrias, Chicago's Festival de la Villita, the Los Angeles County Fair, San Diego's Boo! Parade and Carnival, and the Food City Copa in Phoenix.
The importance of the campaign is heightened by the recent revelation that nearly three-fourths of U.S. children have low levels of vitamin D, putting them at higher risk for bone and dental problems, diabetes and heart diseases. Just a year ago, researchers found that roughly 40 percent of children had tested below average for vitamin D. The current nationwide research collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and released in the August Journal of Pediatrics reveals the percentage of children with low levels of vitamin D is 70 percent. Poor diet is cited as a cause.
Pediatricians and registered dieticians recommend that children consume more foods rich in vitamin D, such as milk, and because it's hard to get enough vitamin D from dietary sources alone, they also recommend nutritional supplements.
