Children's Hospital Boston is the only hospital to place in the top three in all 10 specialties. It ranks second in Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Neonatology and third in Pulmonology. Children's Hospital Boston is ranked first on an Honor Roll of the 11 hospitals that excelled in at least four of the 10 U.S. News specialty rankings.

"We're honored by this recognition from U.S. News, but it really is in our patients' and families' eyes where we want to be number one," says James Mandell, MD, CEO of Children's Hospital Boston. "We see this as a challenge to innovate and push care forward, so we can offer the very best care and service to our families every day."

"The rankings reflect the unique value that our team of caregivers, researchers, employees and volunteers strive to provide to our families every day," adds Sandra Fenwick, President and COO of Children's Hospital Boston.

Best Children's Hospitals pulls together clinical and operational data from a lengthy survey, completed by the majority of the 177 hospitals asked to participate for the 2011-12 rankings. The survey asks hundreds of questions about survival rates, nurse staffing, subspecialist availability, and many more pieces of critical information difficult or impossible for those in charge of a child's care to find on their own. The data from the survey is combined with recommendations from pediatric specialists on the hospitals they consider best for children with challenging problems.

Founded in 1869 as a 20-bed hospital for children, Children's Hospital Boston today is one of the nation's leading pediatric medical centers, the primary pediatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and the largest provider of health care to Massachusetts children. In addition to 395 pediatric and adolescent inpatient beds and more than 100 outpatient programs, Children's houses the world's largest research enterprise based at a pediatric medical center, where its discoveries benefit both children and adults. More than 1,100 scientists, including nine members of the National Academy of Sciences, 12 members of the Institute of Medicine and 13 members of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute comprise Children's research community.
