Los Angeles Graduation ceremony Friday, August 27- 4 p.m. recognizing the dedication of families completing the six-week Healthy Eating Lifestyles Program (HELP).

White Memorial Medical Center has successfully launched the HELP program to assist children and families adopt healthy lifestyles and learn about the importance of healthy eating and staying active. White Memorial is running HELP as a part of a larger region-wide campaign called Hospitals Offering Prevention for Everyone "HOPE" For Health Campaign developed by the Hospital Association of Southern California, National Health Foundation and the Los Angeles Chronic Disease Management Consortium. HOPE unites hospitals around a shared vision to improve the health of patients and communities by emphasizing chronic disease prevention and management through programs like HELP.

In the community served by White Memorial, 26% of children in grades 5, 7 & 9 are obese, 31% of adults are overweight and 20% are obese (Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, 2009). Obesity is linked to numerous health consequences and puts children at risk for early onset type 2 diabetes as well as other serious preventative chronic diseases. Despite these alarming statistics, accessible, FREE and culturally relevant educational programming in communities is lacking. White Memorial has become an important resource for many families seeking education on adopting healthy lifestyles.

HELP is a family-focused childhood obesity prevention and intervention program. It includes medical and behavioral assessments, interactive educational workshops on nutrition and physical activity, telephone follow-ups and opportunities for physical activity and exercise to promote healthy lifestyles. As a result of adopting lifestyle changes, program participants are expected to make healthier food choices, integrate exercise into their everyday activities, watch less TV, and reduce their body mass index (BMI).
