Centers of Excellence Awards Presented to Over 100 Nursing Facilities as Nursing Facilities Reach the 'Tipping Point' in Treating Pressure Ulcers

MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Aug. 13 Centers of Excellence awards were made to over 100 rehabilitation and nursing facilities in Florida at the Florida Health Care Conference in Hollywood, Florida. Each facility received 5 gold stars (the highest rating) for pressure ulcer management from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. The awards were presented by Vohra Wound Physicians' Polly Weaver, Chief of Field Operations, Division of Managed Care and Health Quality.

Historically, facilities with physicians treating pressure ulcers at bedside was considered above and beyond the standard of care in the community nationally. In Florida, however, as physician led bedside pressure ulcer/ wound care programs become the norm, a "Tipping Point" has been reached where physician led bedside pressure ulcer / wound care programs in nursing homes becomes the "Standard of Care" in Florida rather than the exception.

Most people are not aware of the graphic images of pressure ulcers or bed sores (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedsores Pressure ulcers affect millions of people each and every year. They are painful, dangerous and may lead to amputations, re-hospitalization, even death(1). 11% of patients in nursing homes have pressure ulcers(2). The prevalence is even higher for bed bound patients in the home care setting.. Family members, however, are often unaware of the risks until a pressure ulcer is well advanced.
