Carolinas HealthCare System Names National Leader as President of Children's Services

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Carolinas HealthCare System announced that H. Stacy Nicholson, MD, MPH has been named President of the children's service line for the health care system as well as the Sara H. Bissell and Howard C. Bissell Endowed Chair in Pediatrics. In this role, Dr. Nicholson will oversee all pediatric physicians across the Carolinas HealthCare System, including Levine Children's Hospital, Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital and all system pediatric practices.

Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System, Nicholson was the physician in chief at Phoenix Children's Hospital, a nationally recognized stand-alone pediatric hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, where he led the medical specialty divisions and also provided oversight to the hospital's medical education initiatives and research programs.

Dr. Nicholson previously held faculty positions at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and Children's National Medical Center (CNMC). At OHSU, he served in the roles of chair of Pediatrics, division head of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and founding director of the Pediatric Neuro-oncology Program. He is a pediatric oncologist with expertise in brain tumors, new drug development and cancer survivorship. He is also keenly interested in faculty advancement and improving the health and well-being of children and adolescents.

Originally from Georgia, Nicholson has his undergraduate degree from Furman University and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his Masters in public health at George Washington University and trained in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he became the founding clinical director of the Pediatric Neuro-oncology Program.

Nicholson also trained in cancer epidemiology at the National Cancer Institute. He has led and published clinical trials in pediatric oncology and studies of late effects and quality of life in cancer survivors. Nationally, he serves on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Pediatrics and is the immediate past chair of its pediatric hematology/oncology sub-board.
