HOPKINTON, Mass., Nov. 2 Caliper Life Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: CALP), a leading provider of life sciences tools, today announced the availability of two new products that expand the LabChip GX product line: a GLP/GMP-compliant version of the operating software for the LabChip GX instrument that is amenable to manufacturing QC environments and a new protein assay with higher, silver stain levels of sensitivity. The LabChip GX platform has been broadly adopted by biopharmaceutical companies and academic institutions for protein therapeutics, vaccines, and nucleic acid applications.

"Our LabChip GX platform provides unique speed, throughput, cost, and data quality advantages for biologicals and has just begun to be adopted by vaccine producers. The LabChip GX is ideally suited for high throughput characterization of subunit and virus-like particle vaccines, which have emerging uses for the H1N1 influenza, or swine flu, and similar viruses, and the LabChip EZ Reader(®) platform is being used to identify small molecule antiviral drugs that inhibit viral proteases," said Kevin Hrusovsky, CEO of Caliper Life Sciences. "We also plan to launch a high throughput glycan profiling reagent kit for seven different sugar groups this quarter to address a growing assay requirement for characterization of biologicals and vaccines. These revolutionary capabilities have led to the rapid adoption of the LabChip GX platform. In the third quarter of 2009, we sold the most LabChip units of any quarter since the introduction of LabChip technology, aided by record LabChip GX unit sales, which now has an installed base in excess of 100 units. Since the inception of our LabChip product line in 1999, we have now exceeded 500 total LabChip units sold."

"The LabChip GXII is an integral part of our analytical platform that allows us to quickly screen thousands of our protein expression strains for producing vaccines and protein drug candidates in a variety of therapeutic areas," said Jeffrey Allen, Director of Analytical Biochemistry at Pfenex. "Whether as a standalone unit or more recently integrated with our Caliper Sciclone(®) liquid handler and other robotic instruments, the GXII not only improves our throughput, but also helps us automate our research processes more than ever before."

Caliper is working closely with biopharmaceutical analytical development groups to optimize its LabChip platforms for the characterization of biologicals and to expand the application breadth of these platforms. Upcoming developments include a glycan profiling assay and a high throughput approach for western blot analysis, both of which will extend the types of analyses that scientists can perform using Caliper's LabChip platform and complement Caliper's Staccato(®) Protein Workstation, which automates sample preparation for the LabChip GX.

Caliper's substantial collection of patented tools and approaches, including microfluidic chips, instrument design, software data displays and analysis are changing the way research is performed in laboratories around the globe, and Caliper continues to strengthen its intellectual property in this key product area.
