California Science Center Science Matters Speakers Program Presents 'The Science and Ethics of Fear'

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 The California Science Center's Science Matters speakers program will explore "The Science and Ethics of Fear" in a free program from 1 - 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Science Matters panelists will discuss the current science of fear, which fears are innate and which ones are learned, as well as present perspectives on how our collective anxieties are shaped by culture and are sometimes manipulated by the media. Speakers will also address the power of fear and the ethical implications of its use and abuse. Conan Nolan, NBC4 reporter will serve as moderator for the panel discussion, which is free to the public.

Panelists will include: Michael Fanselow, Ph.D., Professor, UCLA Department of Psychology - Area Chair, Learning and Behavior; David Altheide, Ph.D., Regent's Professor, Arizona State University; R. Lindsey Bergman, Ph.D., Associate Director of the Childhood OCD, Anxiety, and Tic Disorders Program; and Keith Esparros, Assistant News Director, NBC4.

Program participants will have a chance to hear the debates on this issue and to ask panelists questions at the end of the program. All those interested in attending may RSVP at 213-744-2420.



While on site for the Science Matters program, guests can also experience Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear, a new exhibit developed by the California Science Center, which explores this universal emotion that can save our lives. Visitors can experience fear through interactive challenges and then discover the science behind their physical and emotional responses. The exhibit runs through December 31, 2007; admission is free.
