Since the implant is not FDA approved in the U.S., but is approved inEurope and Asia, it will be introduced there first through seminars andtraining.

The tour begins in Dusseldorf, Germany, where Dr. Becker and his wife,Janet Cohen R.N.F.A., will be performing bilateral reconstruction surgery ontwo women who have had mastectomies, in front of a live audience of plasticsurgeons, at the 7th Dusseldorf Breast Cancer Conference.

Then they go to Aarhus, Denmark to the Scandinavian Association of PlasticSurgeons lecture, where Dr. Becker will do a seminar on breast reconstructionand correction of congenital anomalies of the breast. Janet Cohen will do apost-op care seminar for nurses.

Finally, they stop in Bangkok, where Dr. Becker will lecture at theBangkok Paragon. "Asia is perfect for this procedure," said Dr. Becker, "Asianwomen often have smaller breasts. This procedure allows us to stretch theskin," a process that, in addition to the cosmetic applications, is essentialfor reconstruction.

After a mastectomy, he explained, the skin is taut and circulation poor, this implant allows surgeons to place the implant in, stretching the skingradually postoperatively. The implant is also useful in treating saggingbreasts where instead of having a two-stage procedure, this new implant allowsthe procedure to be performed in one procedure with less risk ofcomplications. Fluid is added through a port when healing has taken place andis removed six months to a year later, when desired size and shape isachieved.

Dr. Becker and his wife operate in their own full-service plastic surgeryclinic, located at 670 Glades Road in Boca Raton. For more information, call561.394.6656 or visit www.BeckerMD.com.
