Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia Associates Pledge $1.34 Million To Community Organizations in 2008

ATLANTA, Nov. 20 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia(BCBSGa) today announced that its associates have pledged approximately $1.34million to support not-for-profit organizations in Georgia in 2008 as part ofthe company's Associate Giving Campaign.

"The generosity shown by our associates during this campaign highlightstheir integrity and commitment to improving the community where they live andwork," said Monye Connolly, president of BCBSGa. "I am grateful for theincredible generosity of our associates and am proud that we are living themission of our organization in every day ways."

The funds pledged by BCBSGa associates will receive a 50 percent matchfrom the WellPoint Foundation, the parent foundation of the Blue Cross BlueShield of Georgia Foundation, increasing the total to more than $2 million.These funds will help hundreds of not-for-profit organizations fulfill theirmissions. The WellPoint Foundation is one of the nation's largest corporatefoundations with net assets of nearly $200 million.

Across the country, associates of BCBSGa's parent company, WellPoint,Inc., pledged more than $15 million, surpassing the national goal of $13.8million. The 50 percent match from the WellPoint Foundation will raise thetotal to more than $23 million.

During 2007, the WellPoint Foundation and its subsidiary state foundationsfunded $20 million in grants to numerous programs across the country. In manyinstances, the foundations provide emergency grants to support communitiesaffected by disasters. For example, the BCBSGa Foundation provided a $50,000grant to Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus following a devastating tornadoin March of this year.

"Through our Foundations and our social responsibility programs, we putthe full weight of the company into finding lasting solutions to the socialissues we understand best -- health care quality, affordability andaccessibility," said Caroline 'Caz' Matthews, president of the WellPointFoundation. "In the end, this focus, guided in part by our new State HealthIndex, which helps us identify the most critical health care needs in thestate, allows us to have a measurable and sustainable impact in thecommunities we serve."
