Speaking on the curtain press Conference organised here in city today, Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao, Director Emeritus, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences said Health is different from Medicine. When you have a pain you go to doctor and doctor gives you medicine. Pain is a health and Medication is Medicine that alleviates suffering. Our governments don’t understand what is health. There are three aspects of Medicine. One is service, two is education and three is Research. Research is in the bottom of the priorities of our successive governments in India. Governments don’t encourage Research. Individuals don’t carry out research since government doesn’t give them incentives said Dr. Kakarla Subbaro.

Speaking further he said the only goal of most of the Medical students is how to become rich, and make more money. We need to orient young medical students towards service, patient care. We must make them dedicated to the service of the poor. When students get into medical education they have noble thoughts of service initially. But, two years in the education and their experience, all that vanishes Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao said.
Though knowingly well that consumption of alcohol spoils health, Governments still make policies that encourage consumption of alcohol. This leads to lot of health issues.
There are few effective ways to treat the root causes of many diseases, injuries and congenital conditions. In many cases, we manage patients' symptoms using medications or devices. But, now what is big is Regenerative Medicine, which is a game changing area of medicine. This has the great potential to fully heal the damaged tissues and organs. This offers solutions to many problems. Offers hope to people whose medical condition is beyond repair. Regenerative Medicine is the future. It is not new. But, we need to make further progress in this, Dr.. Subbarao said.
Research must go on. The only medical device known in the past is Stethoscope. Now we use many medical devices. 80 per cent of the medical devices used –PT Scan, CT Scan, Ultra Sond etc are imported. Why cant these be manufactured locally he asked. Don’t we have capacity. Indian Doctors have greats skills. Why cant pharma companies hire Doctors to develop medical devices indigenously. The governments must slowly ban the import of medical devices and encourage manufacturing of the same locally under “Make in India” program. I am not asking governments to ban them immediately and suddenly. The imported devices must be phased out slowly over a period of time and we must start producing them domestically, he said. Make these devices locally, use them, perfect them and then export them too, he said.

Even so, nearly one million Indians die every year due to inadequate healthcare facilities and 700 million people have no access to specialist care. 80% of specialists live in urban areas.
Even on manpower front too, India would require investments of up to US$ 20 billion over the next 5 years to reach world standards. Currently, we produce 250,000 doctors annually in the modern system of medicine. A higher number of nurses and para-medical professionals and practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy are also produced. But, manpower shortage will remain for several years to come.
The highlight of this long awaited event is its magnitude. It is the most comprehensive healthcare event of its kind ever held in India with the participation of around 4000 decision makers. The number of scientific sessions is as many as 120 with speakers from all over the world, making it probably the largest ever held in India.
The Indian healthcare sector has emerged as one of the largest service sectors in India. Healthcare spending contributes 8% of GDP. The spending is expected to rise by 12% per annum. This sector employs 9 million people. Rising incomes and growing literacy are likely to drive higher per capita expenditure on healthcare. The diseases trend is shifting from infectious to lifestyle diseases.
The medical equipment market too is growing. The demand for hi-tech products is close to 80 percent of the overall market in India. Major international medical equipment companies are lining up their investments in India for setting up local bases.
Another interesting trend in healthcare sector is medical tourism which has now gained momentum in our country. As overseas patients get quality health services in India for less than half the price prevailing in their countries, India is becoming a popular medical tourist destination in Asia. At present, medical tourism is a US$ 2 billion business and is expected to grow substantially in the future.
As many as 120 scientific sessions will be held with presentations by around 300 international experts from all over the world. Participants will be given 8 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits.
Prof. M. Habeeb Ghatala, Dean and Head, Princess Durru Shehvar Institute of Medical Technology, Hyderabad while speaking at the press conference said, the days of doing single handedly are over. Today what is required is to collaborate. Competitiors, rivals are becoming collaborators. This conference is the venue for collaborations and partnerships, he said.
