NEW YORK, June 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Beyond Type 1, a global non-profit organization focusing on education, advocacy, and a cure for Type 1 diabetes, is excited to confirm the takeover of the core programs of the Diabetes Hands Foundation, which announced the winding down of their organization this morning.

Diabetes Hands Foundation has been a pioneering force for the entire diabetes community since 2008, uniting efforts across Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, as well as across languages and backgrounds. While Diabetes Hands Foundation will shut down, the two communities that DHF runs – TuDiabetes.org (English) and EsTuDiabetes.org (Spanish) – are critical and must be maintained.

After a thorough search, DHF selected Beyond Type 1 as the new home for TuDiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org. Beyond Type 1 is honored to continue operating these two communities and is looking forward to carrying them into the future. Millions of visitors rely on TuDiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org, and Beyond Type 1 will make every effort to expand their reach.

Beyond Type 1 has been committed to efforts including more than Type 1 diabetes since its inception in 2015. Beyond Type 1 understands that the diabetes community is stronger together; an understanding of Type 2 informs an understanding of Type 1 and vice versa. When it comes to diabetes, stigma and many complications do not discriminate by type. When people living with diabetes are brought together, the result is greater numbers and resources and a louder voice. Communities like these ensure that no one living with diabetes ever feels alone.

"We have tremendous respect for TuDiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org, and we intend to transition the two communities seamlessly from DHF to Beyond Type 1," said Thom Scher, COO of Beyond Type 1. "We intend that, for the foreseeable future, the two communities will retain their name and the way they operate. As part of the transition, we are excited to announce that DHF's Director of Community, Mila Ferrer, will be joining Beyond Type 1 as our Director of Programs. Mila will continue to oversee the management of these two communities and she will work to expand them."

The current resources being provided to the Hispanic diabetes community, as well as underserved populations more broadly, are insufficient. TuDiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org are an important part of the equation in providing better resources for underserved communities and are an exciting addition to the Beyond Type 1 family of programs. Beyond Type 1 also recognizes that there is far more work to be done.

Beyond Type 1 was founded in 2015 by Juliet de Baubigny, Nick Jonas, Sarah Lucas and Sam Talbot, and is a new brand of philanthropy leveraging the power of social media and technology, changing what it means to live with a chronic disease. With a focus on education, advocacy, and the path to a cure, Beyond Type 1 has developed a broad ranging portfolio of grantees and programs aimed at improving the lives of people impacted by Type 1 diabetes, and are excited to add TuDiabetes.org and EsTuDiabetes.org to their portfolio.

About Beyond Type 1

Beyond Type 1 was founded in 2015 by Nick Jonas, Juliet de Baubigny, Sarah Lucas, and Sam Talbot, and is a new brand of philanthropy leveraging the power of social media and technology, changing what it means to live with a chronic disease. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an incurable, autoimmune disease impacting both adults and children. T1D accounts for roughly 10% of the more than 420 million global cases of diabetes, and people with Type 1 are insulin-dependent for life. By educating the global community about this autoimmune disease, as well as providing resources and support for those living with Type 1, Beyond Type 1 aims to bridge the gap from diagnosis to cure, empowering people to both live well today and to fund a better tomorrow.

With a focus on education, advocacy, and the path to a cure, Beyond Type 1 has developed a broad ranging portfolio of grantees and programs aimed at improving the lives of people impacted by T1D. Beyond Type 1 is a registered 501(c) 3. 100% of every dollar raised directly supports the most promising global efforts and programs working to educate, advocate and cure Type 1 diabetes.
