"When disaster strikes, being prepared is key to saving lives. The State'snew mobile field hospitals and our trained volunteer emergency responders aregoing to help prepare California to quickly and effectively provide emergencyservices during a major medical disaster," stated Governor ArnoldSchwarzenegger.

BLU-MED supported CAL EMSA in showcasing the flexibility and medicaltriage and treatment capabilities of the mobile hospitals during a week ofintensive training involving multiple state agencies and more than 400emergency responders at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos,California. The exercise, one of the largest in California history, tappedagencies and emergency responders from across the state, and tested thevendor-managed support contract with BLU-MED Response Systems.

The concept of operations for the Mobile Field Hospital program calls forthree 200 bed vendor managed, turn-key hospitals stored in three strategiclocations throughout the state, allowing a rapid initial response to theaffected area and a calculated secondary response where it is needed most. Themobile facilities can be on-site and ready to begin receiving patients within72 hours of an event. They can be configured as 200, 400 or 600 bed hospitalsbased on the need created by the disaster. The mobile facilities will beespecially useful when regular hospitals are incapacitated or overwhelmedbecause of the scope of a disaster.

"We are pleased to assist the state of California in their strategy tobuild, store, maintain, and strategically deploy a flexible system of mobilemedical response facilities," stated Gerrit Boyle, president of BLU-MEDResponse Systems. "The success of this exercise demonstrates our commitment toproviding turn-key solutions to enhance disaster medical preparedness andcommunity health services."
