Mosquito-borne illnesses are a summertime danger to humans and pets alike. Mosquitoes carry a wide range of illnesses that pets are susceptible to, including heart-worm, West Nile Virus, and equine encephalitis. Assisi Animal Health shares 3 ways to protect your pet from mosquito-borne illness this summer.

1.    Minimize habitats. Remove standing water from tarps, pool covers, garbage cans, or other places where standing water can accumulate. Swimming pools' chemistry should be maintained properly and any plastic swimming pools should be emptied when not in use. Keep your pet's water bowls fresh by replacing drinking water frequently. The less standing water available to mosquitoes, the better.

2.    Veterinarian approved repellents. Human mosquito repellents are not recommended for pet use due to the toxicity of the insecticides. Visit your veterinarian for preventative treatment suggestions. Your vet may also make recommendations for natural repellants that can be effective in repelling mosquitoes, such as lemon eucalyptus oil. Be sure to stay on top of preventative medicines for heart-worm as well, since it is the most common form of illness transferred to pets by mosquitoes.

3.    Monitor pet's environment.  Minimize your pet's risk of getting bitten by making sure that all window and door screens are in good condition. Limit your pet's exposure to mosquitoes by discouraging too much outdoor time at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are their most active. If the family is spending time outside with pets, keep a citronella candle burning in the area where it cannot be knocked over.

Assisi Animal Health's clinical solutions complete the Circle of Care® — the collaboration of veterinarians and owners in animal health and healing. Our company helps veterinary professionals and owners improve the quality of life for companion animals using the Assisi Loop, the non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical healing device that is based on the same FDA-cleared technology used on humans. The device uses low-level pulses of electromagnetic energy to reduce pain and swelling, and to enhance recovery.
