- Prepare a safe space. Before your equine returns home from the hospital, prepare a closed stall with extra shavings for cushion. Fit the stall with rubber mats, as this will speed up the process of daily rebedding, and lay out plenty of hay and water buckets within easy accessibility. Also ensure ventilation is up-to-date in order to reduce risk of respiration issues.
- Implement dietary restrictions. Aside from as much grass hay as their hearts desire, consider including alfalfa in your horse's diet to promote digestion. Gradually increase the amount of concentrated feed in their diet to prevent excess energy or digestive issues.
- Continue grooming practices. Consistent grooming is beneficial to the healing process as it keeps them calm while promoting circulation. This is also a great way to keep your equine clean while confined to his or her designated healing location.
- Administer therapy. Depending on the type of injury, consider implementing therapeutic strategies. For joint, tendon, or any other inflammation your horse may be recovering from, targeted pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, such as the Assisi Loop®, has proven highly effective in speeding up recovery from a variety of different surgical procedures.
