The holidays are approaching, and while this is an exciting time for most people and their families, our pets should be able to safely enjoy this time, too. With that being said, our holidays wouldn't be the same without freshly cooked meals for the whole family to enjoy. Assisi Animal Health explains that leftover bones should not be fed to dogs both during the holidays and during the regular year.

Dogs certainly love their bones—they will eat them whenever they get the chance. With the arrival of the holiday season, dogs are more likely to head to the trash or steal meaty bones off the holiday dinner table. Bones are simply not good for your dogs. For example, cooked bones can splinter off, which could lead to a punctured digestive tract.  Additionally, beef bones are prone to shattering, which can injure a dog's intestinal tract.  Blockages can occur, which could lead to emergency surgery.

Oddly shaped bones, including T-bones, can actually get stuck in a dog's esophagus. When this happens, the dog may choke and gasp for air. The issue of choking should not be taken lightly—choking can ultimately lead to death if a dog is not able to get enough air. This issue generally concerns dogs that swallow bones without chewing them completely.

Furthermore, bone consumption can cause bloody injuries to a dog's mouth and tongue. Hollow marrow bones can also get stuck around a dog's jaw and veterinary assistance would be needed to remove them. Bone fragments can also lead to constipation, and can pierce the dog's stomach.

As result of this, dogs should certainly stay away from bones not only this holiday season, but also during the regular year. With all of the possible complications that could arise, pet owners should be wise enough to know that a dog should simply not consume any bones. As a solution to this, feed your dog appropriate treats that are meant strictly for dogs. If you are unsure about whether or not certain foods are safe, do not take any chances.  It is certainly better to be safe than sorry.
