Just as we make changes to our homes to make them more comfortable when the summertime rolls around, there are certain things that are necessary to include when setting up your horse stalls this season. Assisi Animal Health notes three tips on preparing your equine's stall for summer:
- Promote air circulation. As the temperature rises, it becomes increasingly necessary to keep your horses cool. Mounted fans are imperative to this process, but you must ensure they are safe for barn use. Add windows if there aren't any and make sure they are open to allow for air flow through the barn.
- Put out plenty of water. Equines need easy access to water at all times to remain hydrated. A major part of overheating is due to dehydration, so this is one of the most important elements of stall preparation. Never allow the water trough to run out and your horses will thank you for it.
- Change bedding regularly. Flies love to lay eggs in the heat, which draws them to a horse's bedding in the summertime. To prevent these infestations and keep your equine pest-free, change the bedding as frequently as possible. To further this initiative, consider adding flypaper within the stalls to keep them away from your horses.
