Rabies. While rabies is not that common in horses, it is a fatal disease to humans. After the initial vaccine, a horse should receive a booster annually.

Tetanus. Tetanus can be fatal to equines and is caused by a neurotoxin that is produced when the bacteria infects wounds like deep lacerations and punctures.   If not treated, it can cause paralysis and ultimately death. Horses need an annual tetanus vaccine, or it needs to be administered when the horse is wounded.

Influenza. Equine influenza symptoms are similar to that of human flu—including lethargy, high fever, cough, and nasal discharge. Influenza is highly contagious in equines, especially those who travel often. Equines should be vaccinated bi-annually or even more often, depending on how much it travels.

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV)/Rhinopneumonitis. This virus can result in a number of diseases and causes neurologic disease, upper respiratory disease, abortion, and weak or stillborn foals. It is highly contagious and can stay in the horse's environment for up to two weeks. Vaccinate your horse bi-annually for this virus.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)/Western Europe Encephalitis (WEE). These neurological diseases can cause lethargy, fever, seizures, and even death in horses, and are transmitted by mosquitoes and other blood-sucking insects. These vaccines can be administered annually or biannually—depending on risk factors in the area and location of travel.

West Nile Virus. This virus can cause neurological diseases that are similar to the ones caused by EEE and WEE. It can be fatal in horses. The vaccine schedule is similar to the EEE and WEE vaccinations.
