The Manx breed is characterized by a genetic malformation that leaves cats without full tails. While most Manx cats live happy, normal lives, this genetic mutation can sometimes bring about Manx Syndrome (and a whole host of new problems to go along with it). Assisi Animal Health lists four symptoms to look for in a cat with Manx Syndrome:

1. Spina bifida. Spina bifida is a painful disorder that occurs when the spine is not fully formed, and leaves parts of the spinal cord exposed. If your cat has been diagnosed with Manx Syndrome, it's possible they are suffering from both of these conditions. Many pet owners use the Assisi Loop® to help alleviate any pain stemming from either disorder.

2. Malformed pelvic bone. The same gene that alters the size and shape of a Manx cat's tail is oftentimes present in the pelvic bone as well. The gene will express itself as an obvious deformity, but it may signify more serious underlying issues.

3. Bladder and fecal incontinence. Another prominent characteristic is the cat's inability to control bladder and bowel functions. Uncontrollable defecation or urination, along with constipation and inability to urinate, are important symptoms to beware of and should immediately be addressed by a vet.

4. Hind leg paralysis. Full or partial paralysis is a side effect that typically results from the spine's malformation. If you notice that your cat is dragging his or her hind legs, this may indicate he or she has Manx Syndrome. If you suspect your feline has one or more of the aforementioned symptoms, consult with your vet to determine the best available treatment option.
