Both diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound is radiation-free, non-invasive, and often a quick process. Your pet's fur will probably need to be shaved since ultrasound waves are not transmitted through air. The probe must make direct contact with the skin.

Diagnostic ultrasound is most often associated with pregnancy—showing pregnant mothers what their babies look like in utero.   Much like its name, diagnostic ultrasound looks inside your pet's body to evaluate the heart, pancreas, liver, kidneys and blood vessels of the abdomen and neck. This technique is also used to help obtain samples for lab testing such as biopsies. Your pet will most likely not need anesthesia unless he or she needs a biopsy. If he or she is apprehensive, a sedative may be necessary.

Therapeutic ultrasound is used to facilitate healing when your pet is in pain. The procedure uses sound waves that create a deep heat. This heat penetrates into soft tissue and increases the stretch in that tissue, which helps increase range of motion around a joint. Therapeutic ultrasound also softens and breaks down scar tissue that can interfere with your pet's movement. The treatment also increases blood flow—which reduces swelling and inflammation. Most treatments take 10 to 20 minutes, several times a week, until your pet's condition is resolved. Therapeutic ultrasound is often used in conjunction with additional medication and other pain management methodologies.

Assisi Animal Health's clinical solutions complete the Circle of Care® — the collaboration of veterinarians and owners in animal health and healing. Our company helps veterinary professionals and owners improve the quality of life for companion animals using the Assisi Loop, the non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical healing device that is based on the same FDA-cleared technology used on humans. The device uses low-level pulses of electromagnetic energy to reduce pain and swelling, and to enhance recovery.
