Equine Laminitis, also known as Founder Syndrome, is a painful disease that affects the blood flow to the laminae, which is the sensitive inner layer of the hoof wall. While the exact cause of Equine Laminitis is unknown, veterinary professionals believe that a wide variety of factors can lead to the condition. These factors include a diet that's high in sugars and starches, stress, obesity, severe infections, and more.

Horses that are afflicted with laminitis often experience a rapid and severe onset of symptoms. These symptoms include a diminished desire to walk. If severe enough, your horse may refuse to walk at all and will lay down. This may result in the horse having a very difficult time getting up. Additionally, a horse with laminitis will attempt to lean back on its healthy legs in an effort to allay some of the pressure on is affected hooves. Additionally, affected horses may also begin to show some physical abnormalities in their hooves. For example, a horse suffering from chronic laminitis may experience abnormal hoof growth, which causes the heel to grow faster than the toe. He or she may also be a victim of recurring hoof infections due to weakness in the horn growth.

Equine Laminitis can be extremely painful for horses, which is why it's so important that you are able to identify the warning signs. If you catch the disease early enough, you may be able to treat it before the symptoms become too severe, or even fatal. The Assisi Loop can be used to help reduce the inflammation associated with Equine Laminitis.
