A new acquisition takes training and additional time to fit into the family schedule. It is our suggestion that the new family member join after the New Year, where it will receive the full attention of its new owners. The holiday season is a busy time, guests arriving means more front doors opening with the chance of your new pet escaping. The year-end season usually means holiday decorations and wonderful foods, to which the new pet should not have immediate access. Waiting also builds anticipation and starts the New Year out right.

1.   In lieu of a new pet, give the gift of a book on dogs, cats or horses. If you have already chosen your breed, a breed-specific book, or ornament will keep the spirit alive. If you are going to a shelter, give a general animal book and a wrapped IOU.

2   Spend time researching the pet you plan to acquire. Keep in mind the 10 pound puppy can easily go to over 70 pounds at maturity, and be sure you measure the activity level of the animal. If you are buying from a breeder or known source, either canine or feline, let them guide you. Almost all canine and feline breeds have a "parent club" with a website, use them to help make informed decisions. If you are acquiring from a shelter, make sure you ask what they have observed while they have had the animal and whether the animal is spay or neutered and what vaccines it has.

3.  When taking your new pet home, be prepared to have the food it has currently been fed to avoid any digestive issues. You should get at least a week's food to start. If the food is generic, it is good to choose a food that has growth options, and takes an animal from youth to adult and senior but remember switching foods takes a week of integrating former food with new.

4.  For a youngster, have a special place set aside that is "theirs" and which has an enclosure to start. Have chew toys for the pup and scratching options for the kitten. If your new family member is an adult or senior animal, make sure they have an area or bed that they know is theirs and to which they can "retire" if needed.  And all animals, young or old, thrive on a schedule. They like to know when to expect to "go out" and when to expect to be fed.

5.  And finally, every new pet should visit your veterinarian within 72 hours of acquisition. This first visit becomes the baseline for the future. If possible bring health records, and come with any questions prepared.

Enjoy your new pet!
