Designed for licensed registered nurses (RNs) who have earned either a diploma or an associate's degree in nursing, the university's new bachelor's degree program will build upon pre-licensure nursing coursework to help prepare students for professional advancement while meeting the goals articulated by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

According to the AACN, the primary pathway to professional nursing is a bachelor of science in nursing degree, compared to the technical-level practice of an RN. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) released a newsletter in 2013 titled "The Case for Academic Progression," which outlined how patients, employers, and the profession benefits when nurses advance their education. The report calls for academic progression with two specific goals for 2020: an 80-percent baccalaureate-prepared nursing workforce and a doubling of doctorates held by nurses.

Each nursing course at Argosy University, Phoenix is delivered in a blended format, a combination of online and on-campus experiences. Class is held on campus one day per week to accommodate the busy lives and schedules of working nurses.

"There is a need for bachelor's degree nursing programs to help both nurses and hospitals in the state of Arizona," said Diann DeWitt, PhD, RN, CNE, chair of the nursing program at Argosy University, Phoenix. "By focusing on courses geared towards building the necessary skills professional nurses require, graduates will be better prepared to advance their careers in nursing and meet the growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals."

The university is partnering with local hospitals and healthcare agencies to establish cohort classes at their locations. By holding classes at their sites, employers are better able to advance the professional development of their employees while ensuring the skills they have the opportunity to learn are tailored to the needs of their organization.
