Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Nevada and its Foundation Commit Over $340,000 to Nevada Nonprofits in 2008

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 11 Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Nevada has a long history of giving back to the communities where its associates live and work. In 2008, the strong commitment continued through financial support from the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation and the generosity of the company's associates.

Anthem's community efforts for 2008 were highlighted by a $19,000 contribution from its own 150 employees that will support over 40 community-based non-profit organizations throughout Nevada. Through its annual Associate Giving Campaign, Anthem associates can direct their giving to any 501(c)(3) organization. The funds pledged by Anthem associates will receive a 50 percent match from the parent company's Foundation, increasing the total to nearly $30,000.

"Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield associates are some of the most generous people I've ever met," said Mike Murphy, President, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Nevada. "In these challenging economic times, our associates give from their hearts to Nevada organizations that make a difference for people in need."



Nationwide, associates of Anthem's parent company pledged more than $16 million to nearly 10,000 charities. In addition to the Associate Giving Campaign contribution, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation grants in Nevada in 2008 totaled approximately $210,000, including commitments to:



The American Lung Association of Nevada to reduce youth tobacco use through the expansion and continuation of two of the organizations effective youth prevention and cessation programs -- Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) and Not on Tobacco (N-O-T).



Southern Nevada Health District, Office of Chronic Disease Prevention to support the "Get Healthy Clark County" campaign which engages Nevadans in a public education campaign that promotes healthy living.



Nevada Health Centers to provide free testing to those Nevadans concerned about their exposure to Hepatitis B,C or HIV/AIDS.



Nevada Covering Kids and Families to enroll 1500 uninsured children in the state's Child Health Insurance program.



"It is vital that we reach out to preteens and teens before they start smoking," said Allison Newlon Moser, executive director, American Lung Association of Nevada. "Thanks in large part to the generous support of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, we will be able to train more than 700 Nevada teenage educators who will then educate more than 25,000 elementary and middle school students across our state about the harmful effects of tobacco using this powerful tobacco prevention program."



In addition to the Foundation grants and generosity of Anthem associates, Anthem also provided $110,000 to several nonprofit organizations, including: the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the American heart Association, the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Nevada Cancer Institute, Nevada Business Journal's "Heroes in Health" awards dinners, St. Vincent's Food Pantry, Las Vegas PBS and the Community Food Bank of Clark County.



These community commitments by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Nevada, its Foundation and parent company Foundation total more than $340,000 for 2008.
