Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana Encourages Hoosier Healthwise Members to See Physicians for Preventive Care

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 15 Nearly 1,000 Hoosier Healthwisemembers throughout the state will receive a personal phone call tomorrow fromAnthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield encouraging them to contact their assignedprimary medical provider for preventive care. Tomorrow's effort is being heldto help educate members on the importance of establishing a medical home.

Anthem has set up phone banks at its Community Resource Centers located inIndianapolis, Evansville and Merrillville and will spend the day contactingmembers who have yet to see their primary medical provider. "HoosierHealthwise members are assigned to primary medical providers who serve as themembers' primary contact for personalized, preventive care," said JuliaBrillhart, regional field director, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. "Havingongoing dialogue with their physician helps members establish a medical homewith their primary medical provider who is familiar with their medical historyand can provide medical care in a coordinated and timely fashion," addedBrillhart.

The role of the primary medical provider is also important in helping toprovide early diagnosis for medical conditions, and if needed, provide theappropriate level of care before the conditions become chronic or requireemergency care. Additionally, the American Academy of Pediatrics encouragesthe use of a medical home for children, and describes the medical home as amodel of delivering primary care that is accessible, continuous,comprehensive, family-centered, coordinated, compassionate and culturallyeffective.

"We want to use this day as an opportunity to reach out and encourage ourHoosier Healthwise members to understand the importance of regular healthscreenings," said Rob Hillman, president and general manager, Anthem BlueCross and Blue Shield in Indiana. "Research has shown that we often need to bemotivated to seek regular health care. We want to motivate our members tounderstand the value of preventive care and make an appointment with theirphysician to discuss their health care needs."
